6 Reasons Why You Should Consider Retiring in Auburn-Opelika

Auburn, Alabama is known as the loveliest village on the plains, and it truly is. From the numerous outdoor activities, some of the greatest restaurants in the state and even country, the museums and architecture and, most of all, the warm and welcoming people that make you feel right at home here on the plains.

Southern Living Magazine named Auburn, Alabama as one of the best small towns to retire in the south. It praised Auburn for an excellent variety of dining options, top-notch golfing, arts and sporting entertainment.

We at The Talons Group love Auburn and Opelika. We want you to find a place here to call home. Here are our 6 reasons why you should consider retiring in the Auburn/Opelika area:

Food

It is incredibly easy to find an extraordinary meal for every taste and budget in Auburn and Opelika. Our restaurants have been featured in Southern Living, Gourmet, Wine Spectator as well as other reputable sites and magazines.

Whether your go-to is a great brunch, tacos, sushi, burgers, pasta or Vietnamese, we have it all.

Brunch is huge here in Auburn. It’s a great way to start football game day festivities if the game is later in the day and it’s a great way to relax and recover from the excitement of a home football game. The Hound, Acre, Amsterdam or, for a more casual southern-style breakfast, Byron’s Smokehouse are just a few that come to mind for amazing cuisine.

Opelika also boasts a number of superb dining experiences. The Irish Bred Pub has a unique atmosphere that features a small balcony with a few tables. You can enjoy the view of downtown Opelika while having a glass of wine or beer with original Irish cuisine. Zazu Gastropub, which consists of American style eats and Ma Fia’s Ristorante, featuring classic Italian fare are a couple of other must-try spots in downtown Opelika.

Activities

Whether you prefer the fresh air of the outdoors or you prefer to browse inside at shops or museums, Auburn and Opelika both have plenty of options to choose from.

Just to name a few ways to spend a morning or afternoon outdoors, Chewacla State Park, Donald E. Davis Arboretum and Kiesel Park are all beautiful places to go for either a mild hike, walk or just to sit and appreciate nature.

If you love to golf, you should look no further than to retire in the Auburn/Opelika area. We boast five gorgeous golf courses including the Robert Trent Jones Grand National and the Moore’s Mill Golf Club.

We are also just a short 40-minute drive to beautiful Lake Martin. Lake Martin is 41.150 acres of glistening water. There are numerous beautiful homes and hotels to stay at for just the weekend or even the whole summer. It’s truly a spectacular place to relax by yourself or with the whole family.

If you prefer inside activities, especially when the weather doesn’t allow for outdoor ones, the Jule Collins Smith Museum of Fine Art is a beautiful way to spend your time. Newly renovated, it features works from masters like Picasso and Renoir among others.

People

You will not find another city that has more welcoming and friendly locals than Auburn and Opelika. While Auburn is a college town, students love to interact with locals and retirees. They love and respect Auburn just as much (or maybe even more) as those who choose to live here long-term or choose to retire here.

You are guaranteed to hear a warm welcome of “War Eagle” wherever you go.

Limited Traffic

If you are like most, you hate waiting in traffic. In Auburn and Opelika, we hardly have enough to even call it traffic. It’s very easy and fast to get around town. There is no hassle or frustration in getting to doctor’s appointments, lunches or dinners.

The only time Auburn does have a little traffic is on home game football weekends. If you would rather not deal with the hustle and bustle of people driving in and around town those weekends, however, you can choose to spend time in less populated areas such as parks and restaurants that are further away from downtown Auburn.

Central location

Auburn has a small-town feel while still having plenty to do to keep you occupied. However, if you want the occasional weekend of the hustle and bustle of a bigger city, Montgomery is about an hour away, Birmingham is about two hours away and Atlanta is a little under two hours away. As you can see, you have plenty of bigger cities to explore on the weekends if you need a little city getaway.

While we do have a small airport, the Atlanta airport is only about an hour and a half away. To make the Atlanta Airport even easier to access, Groome Transportation, a shuttle bus, takes 17 trips daily seven days a week from Auburn to the Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport.

Medical Area

One of the most convenient things, especially for seniors, is how close together a number of doctors and specialty offices are. There are about 15 doctors all located on Dean Road that range from eye physicians to foot care.

Apart from doctors offices, the East Alabama Medical Center, an excellent emergency center, is just a short drive from Auburn in Opelika.

According to Brooke Peace Harris, Digital Marketing Manager for the Auburn-Opelika Tourism Bureau “People come to Auburn to go to college, but they love it so much, they decide to stay.”
